Last days of March

Posted in April, Charlie, Luke at 4:05 pm by selfwalker

The last time I posted was one day before the glorious Pi Day and many other events have also happened since then.
  1.  April and I have both had our spring break.  Unfortunately, our two breaks did not occur during the same week.  April did some wonderful spring cleaning around the house and also took care of Charlie the entire time.  I also cleaned, finding a $100 Amazon gift certificate!
  2. April and I went on a weekend trip.  We were celebrating our 2nd year wedding anniversary.  On day one we camped and rode bikes along the New River in Virginia.  We had great weather: cool-sunny days for biking and clear chilly nights for camping.  Day two we rented a cabin, (cabin #4), near the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It was great find.  The cabin felt remote, nestled in the woods, and they even brought us breakfast in the morning.
  3. Charlie has been walking faster and faster with his walker.  I posted a video on my YouTube page.  (Click here to watch it)  Perhaps the month of April will be Charlie’s first steps.
  4. I have posted some new pictures at my website.  Click here to see them.
  5. We have been tossing around the idea of moving.  We really love where we live, but we would like to have a yard for Charlie and also having a shorter commute to our jobs would be a bonus.  We will keep our eyes open.

There you have it; our two week check up.  Enjoy your final days of March.  April Fool’s is just around the corner.  Lastyear I wrote that April was having another kid.  A certain someone took the bait.  Hmm… what can I do this year?

He walks, I walk, we walk

Posted in April, Charlie, Luke at 1:40 am by selfwalker

Charlie is now WALKING with a walker.  He strolls around the house running into walls or any thing in his way.  Although he cannot turn the walker around now, he may in a week.  Just during the past seven days I have noticed a big difference in his walking ability.  He is getting faster and at times even letting go of the walker.  The time when I’ll be throwing him a football and then him running for a touchdown is just around the corner.

I have been keeping up with my morning walks.  Recently I earned this award.  (click here to see it)  My monthly goal for total miles has increased from 20 miles to 40 miles.  Honestly, my only motivation to continue walking are podcasts and my monthly goal.  Health and exercise have nothing to do with it, but they are nice outcomes.  Being able to listen to science news, a hip-hop mix, interviews, academic discussions, talk shows, etc. is a great way to start the day.  I cannot really say that I am any smarter from listening to hours and hours of podcasts, but I do believe that from hearing so many different perspectives my critical thinking skills have greatly improved.  I think there for I am.

April and I have been on our marriage walk for two years.  Our anniversary was March 11. Year two is cotton.  So we tailored our gifts towards that theme.  Also, we went out to eat to our favorite restaurant downtown, The Wine and Bistro.  Next weekend we will be traveling around Virginia for our anniversary trip.  Overall, my walk with April is amazing.  She never misses an opportunity to say thank you, to help out, to listen, to laugh, to communicate, and to Love.  As the path in wood diverges, I am so thankful that we chose to walk together and not take separate paths.

Time to go to bed; I have to get up at 6 and walk in the morning!

Move the goal post

A SUPER CRAZY HAT UPDATE:  Remember the story about me finding Charlie’s hat on the sidewalk curve?  The hat that had been missing for about three weeks?  Well there has been a slight twist in events because today we found the hat again!  I saw the hat at my mother-in-law’s house and I quickly asked  April, “Hey did you bring this hat here?”  ”No.” she said.  Her face was as confused as mine.  Both us were thinking the exact same thing, “Well then whose hat do we have at our house?  Is it some one else’s?”  This experience was very weird.  What is the chance of me finding a hat that looks exactly like Charlie’s, as I am walking back to pick up his other that Charlie just through out of his wagon, while April and I were strolling around down town?  Before today I would have said no chance, but I now see that there is one.  As a result, finding the actual hat throws a wrench in the possible reasons for finding the “hat” the first time.  Could I still say that I created it or that a spirit guided me to it or that it was meant to be?  Sure but then I would have to change the beliefs a bit so that they could now fit the new story.  This is sort of like the phrase, “moving the goal post”, which basically means changing your ideas so that your ideas are not wrong.  For instance, suppose someone finds a study that conflicts with their beliefs.  Their reaction could be, “Well that is just one study; that doesn’t really show much.”  Even if more evidence conflicts with their beliefs, they can just keep moving the goal post farther and farther back, to the point that the beliefs can never be seen as possibly false.  Better yet, is when one study, or form of evidence, is found that supports their beliefs and they say, “Told you so!”  Thus, only one is needed to confirm while an uncountable amount is needed to expose the lack of reason. So if anyone one else is missing a blue hat with orange stripes and ear flaps let me know because Charlie cannot wear two at a time.  Yes, two heads are better than one, but you still only need one hat.

Attempting Politics

Posted in Luke at 12:52 am by selfwalker

Politics and Selfwalker is a combo that does not happen too often.  Politics just seem so broad and vague and most of the time I would not even know where to begin to talk about the topic.  But this does not mean that I ignore politics, rather I just listen critically to the argument.  Here is an example.  Just last week, I watched this video (click to watch) from the website True Majority Action.  This video would be great to show in many classrooms because of the Mathematics involved and opportunity to critique a persuasive argument.  First the Math. The bar graph with cookies is a neat and catchy way to display the data.  Also, the redistribution of cookies to other categories is also correct mathematically.  I am sure there is other math but that is what stands out.  Now time for the arguments being made.  The amount of logical fallacies being used in this video overwhelm me.  From the start the script says things like “…taking Ameria back” and “…it (federal budget) is why college scholarships are dried up, schools are broke, and 12 million kids growing in poverty”.  These are wonderful cliche statements that could easily motivate a citizen to think, “Yeah look at how screwed up the government is!”  I say,

“Does this really make sense? Are 12 million kids really in poverty because of the federal budget? Where is the evidence in any these claims?  Are are they just TRUE because every one just knows that they are TRUE.  I guess the claims are possible, but I’m skeptical.

Furthermore, the video suggests an idea of taking a chunk of money from the military budget and redistributing to other categories.  True the military budget is huge but what all is included in this category?  How much is salary paid to troops or how much funds research?  Also, does simply giving more money to an category make it better?  If so, then should we give more money to the military budget as a way to bring more PEACE into the world?  Overall, the idea is again cliche; basically take from the rich and give to the poor.  All of this sounds great but is it practical?  I don’t know and I’m fine with not knowing.  As the presidential debates continue, I will continue to listen those speaking and, just as important, listen to those reacting.  If you too are going to listen, how about trying use those awesome math skills and skeptical ear?

Reality

Posted in Charlie, Luke at 3:57 pm by selfwalker

After a week of three times the amount of diaper and outfit changes, Charlie is fully back to normal now.   I’m so glad that is over; I don’t look forward to the next one.  Depending on what your belief is about reality some would say,

If you don’t want it, then don’t create it.  You have the power to create anything in your reality.

Others may say,

You have no choice, there is no free will, it will or won’t happen; there is nothing you can do about it

and others may say,

the Universe does not hear NO’s or NOT’s so focus your energy on positive thoughts.

and others may say

Just pray to (insert who ever), they will keep you in perfect health.

I have held all of these beliefs, probably many others too, at least once during my span of 30 years.  Now what belief do I hold as True?  All?  None?  I guess I would say both ALL and NONE since I really don’t hold any of them as the ultimate Truth.  Why pick sides? Sure if you don’t stand for some thing then you fall for everything; however I have seen many people stand for something and ignore every thing. Yada, yada, yada, philosophy….So April and I were taking Charlie on wagon ride yesterday.  I look back to see that Charlie no longer had his hat on.  Then in the distance I see his little blue hat on the sidewalk.  I run back to pick it up and upon my return I see another hat of Charlie’s.  Finding this other hat was amazing because we have been looking for it for the past three weeks.  The whole time the hat was sitting there on the sidewalk waiting for our return.  I’ll let you decide if the hat was there the whole time, if I created the hat being their, or at that moment I finally wanted to have the hat again thus seeing the hat, or a spirit told to look down or just wow congrats on finding the hat.

1 for 3

Posted in Luke at 1:43 pm by selfwalker

I know that it is not March 14, but I have already lost one of the over unders that I proposed.  April cut the back of my hair, which began to curl up like a Kentucky Waterfall.  She also trimmed the sides a bit.  I would call them side burns; yet I should point out that they are more like woman sideburns since I don’t grow that much facial hair.  My side burns are just long hair extending from the side, not from my face.  Before the cut, my hair almost looked exactly like the haircut I had in my 3rd grade photo.  I was wearing this green dinosaur shirt and the big ol’ mop of hair had a bit of bed head flare to it.  I had forgot that it was picture day, so I just woke up and went to school.  Great memory! April still is not quite 100%.  Charlie is back to playing with toys and crawling around.  However he still has been going through about 4 outfits a day since he still has the dirty water poo.  Yummy times!Happy March, March on…
